Patrick Mahomes insists he was never concerned by Travis Kelce’s slow start to the 2024 season.

The tight end silenced his critics with a record-breaking performance in the Chiefs’ 17-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Kelce amassed 89 yards over seven receptions as the back-to-back Super Bowl champions moved to 4-0.

It came after a few disappointing weeks for the 34-year-old, who came under fire after only eight catches and 69 yards across Kansas City’s opening three games.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, some of Kelce’s Chiefs teammates showed their support for the tight end by wearing custom t-shirts carrying his name and picture.

But Mahomes revealed that he had no doubt Kelce would come good.

The quarterback, who collided with Rashee Rice early in the game, said: ‘The whole Kelce thing, in general, hasn’t been a worry to me.

‘I know whenever we need him, he’s going to make plays. That’s what he did today.’

The quarterback added: ‘I think it’s a mixture of everything.

‘Obviously with Rashee going down early, you’ve got to factor that (in). And you’ve got to put Kelce back in that situation where he’s getting high-volume catches.

‘Then just the Chargers taking away some of the outside stuff and leaving the middle of the field open, and we were able to get it to Trav in some of those zone coverage.’

Taylor Swift missed the game at SoFi Stadium as Kelce broke a Kansas City franchise record early into their Sunday night showdown against the Chargers.

In the first quarter of the Chiefs’ 17-10 victory in Inglewood, the tight end recorded his 917th reception – breaking Tony Gonzalez’s record of 916.
