The Kansas City Chiefs needed a wide receiver to step up for the injured Rashee Rice, and JuJu Smith-Schuster did just that against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

Smith-Schuster caught seven passes for 130 yards during the Chiefs’ 26-13 win over the Saints, boosting Kansas City to 5-0 on the season. The eight-year veteran Smith-Schuster looked spry, finding open space against the defense and racking up yards after the catch.

After the game, Chiefs coach Andy Reid reiterated what he has always thought about Smith-Schuster’s value to the team.

“JuJu is a good football player,” Reid said. “He’s been a good football player for a long time. He had the tip-up in the end zone and felt terrible. Then he came back and had two good ones. He’s a good pro and did a great job with that.”

The “tip-up” Reid referenced was a pass from Patrick Mahomes that went off the hands of Smith-Schuster and was intercepted by Saints and former Chiefs’ defensive tackle Khalen Saunders in the endzone.

It’s a ball that Smith-Schuster probably should have caught, but it was thrown a bit behind him and he took a pretty hard shot to the back while attempting to catch it.

Like he has done so often over the years, Reid dialed something up for Smith-Schuster following his mistake, which resulted in a catch across the middle of the field that Smith-Schuster took it into the redzone after a gain of 50 yards.

This would lead to a game-sealing touchdown run by rookie receiver Xavier Worthy.

Smith-Schuster now has 147 receiving yards on the season, already nearly matching his total of 260 from a year ago while he was with the New England Patriots.

He is also just the second Chiefs receiver to record 130 yards in a game since Tyreek Hill was traded after the 2021 season (H/T Brandon Kiley of 101 ESPN St. Louis).

The Chiefs now enter their bye-week as they continue to evaluate the receiver position moving forward. They could still look to upgrade the position via trade, but if nothing else they have an extra week to figure out how best to utilize the guys that are on the roster.

Regardless of how it shakes out, knowing that Smith-Schuster still has plenty of gas left in the tank is going to pay big dividends for K.C.’s offense.
